How do Regular Kidney Function Tests help to detect Chronic Kidney Disorder?

How does Regular Kidney Function Tests help in active diseases Check

Are you suffering from any kidney diseases? Are you going through regular screening of your kidney? It is important to have regular health check-ups to diagnose kidney function parameters and detect chronic kidney disease (CKD). You must get tested for monitoring kidney health and disease progression. The diagnostic test all tells about the functioning of the kidney. Early diagnosis and customized treatment support slow down the progress of kidney disorders.

Who must opt for a Kidney function test?

CKD must be treated as soon as possible. It is best to get tested once a year. We are discussing certain groups that are at a high risk of kidney disorders

  1. People with ureter blockages, diabetes, hypertension, and lupus have a high probability of kidney disorder. Other factors such as family history, age, weight, and overall health also increase the chances of CKD. If you are suffering from any of these risk factors, then talk to your clinician.
  2. Showing signs of CKD- If you are showing any CKD signs then schedule a blood test for kidney function from a trusted lab.

Diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD)

The abnormal levels of kidney function tests are the first sign that tells about CKD. The clinician will ask you to go for other test parameters to confirm the CKD.

  • Analysis of glomerular filtration rate (GFR)- GFR is a factor that tells about the functioning of your kidneys. The estimated GFR depicts the status of the kidney. Also, it tells about the quantity of creatinine in the blood. Once the level of creatine is estimated, the GFR can be monitored using weight, age, ethnicity, body size, and gender.
  • Determination of the level of kidney function- The kidney function varies with age. If the GFR comes out between 30-44 then the doctor will ask you to go to a nephrologist for the extra tests.  These tests help to diagnose abnormalities leading to CKD.
  • Customized treatment plan- With the above-mentioned diagnostic tests, the clinician will monitor your kidney function. The doctor can develop a customized treatment plan as per the need of the patient.

Various types of kidney function tests

There are various types of kidney function tests meant for a specific purpose. The doctor will prescribe depending on the need of the patient. There are three kinds of tests: Blood, urine, and imaging tests.

Blood tests

  • Serum creatinine- It monitors the creatinine level in the blood.  Creatinine is a waste product synthesized by the muscles. The parameters above 1.2 in females and 1.4 in males may signify kidney damage.
  • Blood pressure test- It measures blood pressure caused by the flow of blood via blood vessels. High blood pressure signifies increased CVD risk and needs regular kidney function tests
  • Renal function panel- It measures key substances in the blood that can signify the improper functioning of your kidneys.
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test– It monitors urea nitrogen in the blood. It is a waste item that is synthesized during the breakdown of proteins in the blood. A level of 20 or more signifies reduced kidney function or dehydration.

Urine tests

  • Urine protein test- It monitors the protein level released in urine by the kidneys. The normal elimination level is less than 150 mg/day. The excess quantity of protein can result in a condition known as proteinuria.
  • Albuminuria to creatinine ratio (ACR test)- It measures levels of albumin in the urine. Results higher than 30 mg/gm indicate kidney disease.
  • Urinalysis- It diagnoses the pH, blood, bacteria, WBC, excess amount of protein, and pus. These all factors may signify kidney damage.
Imaging tests
  • CT scan- It offers detailed X-ray kidney images for accessing the abnormalities or damage to the kidney.
  • Ultrasound imaging- It sends sound waves into the body for creating images measuring the location, size, and shape of kidneys, bladder, and ureters. The images may also help to diagnose tumors, cysts, obstructions, fluid collection, abscesses, and infections in and around the kidney.

Other key tests

Kidney biopsy diagnoses the parameters that other tests are not able to detect. The clinician will extract samples from kidney tissue and can monitor key reasons for abnormal kidney function tests like swelling, scarring, and protein deposits.

Role of kidney function tests in CKDA blood test for kidney function is quite important. It helps to diagnose Chronic kidney disease and know the status of your kidney. As soon as CKD is diagnosed with the test, you must go to the doctor. The doctor will prescribe additional tests and a personalized treatment plan for slowing the progression of the disease. Moreover, the kidney function test price is pocket friendly.
