Selin Sakarcan Shares Her Knowledge on Athlete’s Foot

Athlete Foot

A fungal infection that affects the skin between the toes is medically known as an ‘athlete’s foot’. This is the place that it erupts from generally and from there on it begins to spread if proper care is not taken informs Selin Sakarcan. This is popularly seen in people who have moisture in between the toes either due to their working condition or due to perspiration.

The initial symptoms of this include itching and a rash that scales off when scratched. The speed at which this spread is rather fast because of its contagious characteristic. It is related to other fungal infections such as jock itch and ringworm. It is rather difficult to get rid of this for there have been reports of its recurrence despite being treated by antifungal medications.

Causes of spreading

The ways in which this could spread include the use of common towels or the exchange of clothing. Additionally, this can spread between two people if the two use a common damp setting such as a communal shower or swimming pool. Now because this is a scaling rash, the scales are often off and if anyone comes in contact with that they too could get affected by it.

Selin Sakarcan informs that if an affected person touches the area and without washing the hand touches some other area, the infection could spread to that place. Ideally, treating this contaminated area with medication, it should be cured within two to four weeks, but in most cases, it is seen to linger on for a longer time. For as long as the fungus remains on the body, there are chances of it being passed onto other areas of the same body or onto some other coming in contact.

Identification signs

The identification of the fungal infection can be made by seeing the following symptoms:

  • Inflammation and redness on the skin
  • Burning sensation or stinging
  • Uncontrollable itching, especially after taking off shoes
  • Cracked skin or scaling of skin in between the toes
  • Presence of blisters

Preventive measures

If one wants to stop this contagious infection from spreading like wildfire, one should make sure that they do the following things:

  • Not share their clothes or similar things with others
  • Wear shoes whenever possible
  • Wearing socks while sleeping and changing the socks frequently
  • Not walking barefoot in common damp areas such as swimming pools and common showers
  • Airing the feet out regularly
  • Maintaining proper feet hygiene regularly which includes washing them thoroughly with warm soapy water and then drying out the feet completely.
  • Having more than one pair of shoes so that wearing the same sweaty shoes can be avoided

 Risk factors

One may be at risk of developing an athlete’s foot because of the following reasons:

  • Wearing closed shoes frequently
  • Heavy perspiration
  • Sharing of some form of fabric such as clothes, towels, bed linens, mats, etc.
  • Moving around in common damp areas without shoes.

Thus as in the opinion of Selin Sakarcan whenever one sees that the itchiness of the foot does not reduce within two weeks to one month of self-treatment, they should consider it a sign to visit the doctor and take stronger medications for the same.
