The Future is STEM : But what does stem stand for?

what does stem stand for

What does stem stand for? Many have the idea that stem word is associated with plant stem or Embryonic stem cell and they are not wrong. Everyone is right based on their knowledge about the word ‘Stem’ but in academic context, STEM stands forScience, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM subjects are based on the real world setting and demand your observation.

After getting an answer to this question about what does stem stand for? Let’s move on to understand this educational concept comprehensively.

Significance of STEM

STEM consists of four subjects which are complementary to each other. To construct a bridge, you should know engineering but you have to take help of technology to make every part of the bridge. Now you should know geometry to plan the blueprint of every measurement and science is the logic you put in planning everything.

Let’s move on to study S, T, E AND M and what does stem stand for?

  1. SCIENCE IS BASE OF EVERYTHING

Science is a way to explain why everything happens. Have you ever noticed how little kids want to know everything and have a bunch of questions to ask from every person they see ? Their mother even gets tired of explaining why this happens and how it happens. But that kid still wants an answer. He is not satisfied. Now he goes to his teacher and asks more, his teacher tries teaching aids to show him how a certain thing works. For example, A six years old child notices that the moon is following him everywhere he goes and due to his egocentric nature at the development stage, he thinks that the moon exists just for him. He goes to his mother and asks why the moon is following him and she tells him a silly story about it and when he asks his teacher, she explains the logic behind the moon that the moon is very big and far away. That’s why he can see the moon from anywhere. If the child still doesn’t get anything, she will show him a video and even make a diagram about a truck which is big and far and how you can still see it from a distance and from different angles.

This is Science, the answer to every question which demands a scientific approach.

Scientific Approach :

  • Observe the thing which triggers you to think about it.
  • Ask questions to yourself and others like that six years old kid.
  • Collect a lot of information from any source you find such as : Internet, old school projects, teachers, elders, knowledgeable young ones (maybe they know something that you don’t.).
  • Research and research
  • Make hypotheses about it, think, estimate and rethink. It is fun to make your own theories.
  • Analyze everything and make important points about your research.
  • Conclude everything, summarize the facts.

And you are ready to become a scientist. Yes this is how they work.

  1. TECHNOLOGY : A GIFT TO MANKIND

Application of your scientific knowledge that you gained in the previous section for solving the problems of this world is Technology. From a mini needle to the Ultra big satellites all are made with help of technology. No one can survive if you snatch technology from them.

Electricity is second in demand after oxygen to live life. Vehicles to travel and phones to maintain contact with people who live far away. Artificial machines are taking over everything. If you study technology, Then you have a bright future as you can invent and help this world.

  1. MAGICAL HANDS : ENGINEERING

If science is the mind and technology is the idea, then engineering is the hand that will put everything together. It is the blueprint to plan and execute.

The idea of making a submarine was started with a scientific approach, then it needed a blueprint and model based on trial and error theory. Engineering is the hand that took a pencil, drew the entire diagram and measured every angle, made a mini model of the exact submarine, failed and tried, then retried. This led to the invention of the Submarine.

  1. MATHEMATICS : A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

A lot of people hate maths and try to avoid it. Why ? Because they are impatient and can’t trust the process. It demands several trials and so many failures to get the desired result. But maths is the language that is spoken by the whole universe. Even non living material speaks this language. The calculations, structures, estimations, and constructions are the main components of mathematics that makes it an important subject to define the question : What does stem stand for ?
