The Route

The entire Sandakphu trekking route runs through Sikkim, West Bengal, and western Nepal. Sandakphu, at 11930 feet, is the highest peak of both the Singalila and West Bengal ranges. What does Sandakphu actually mean?

Sandakphu means ‘height of poison plants’. The high number of poisonous aconite aconitum plants at Sandakphu (the highest point in Singalila’s range) is to blame. Even though medicines can be extracted from the roots, it is dangerous to eat the small purple-blue flowers of the same aconite plants.
